چکیده

1 A detailed description is given of the data analysis leading to the discovery of young massive star clusters (YMCs) in a sample of 21 nearby galaxies. A new useful tool, ishape, for the derivation of intrinsic shape parameters of compact objects is presented, and some test results are shown. Completeness tests for the cluster samples are discussed, and ishape is used to estimate cluster sizes. Half-light radii of 0 20 pc are derived for clusters in 2 of the most cluster-rich galaxies, NGC 1313 and NGC 5236, which is within the range spanned by globular clusters in the Milky Way and by YMCs in the LMC and some starburst galaxies. Photometric data for all clusters, along with positions and estimated half-light radii, are tabulated.

Scaling relations in dynamical evolution of star clusters

We have carried out a series of small scale collisional N-body calculations of single-mass star clusters to investigate the dependence of the lifetime of star clusters on their initial parameters. Our models move through an external galaxy potential with a logarithmic density profile and they are limited by a cut-off radius. In order to find scaling relations between the lifetime of star cluste...

Massive and Globular Clusters – Part of the same family ?

Populations of young star clusters show significant differences even among “normal” disk galaxies. In this contribution I discuss how properties of young cluster systems are related to those of their host galaxies, based on a recent study of clusters in a sample of 22 nearby spiral galaxies. Luminous young clusters similar to the “super” star clusters observed in starbursts and mergers exist in...

Globular Clusters in nearby Galaxy Clusters

The discovery of a large population of intra-cluster star clusters in the central region of the Hydra I and Centaurus galaxy clusters is presented. Based on deep VLT photometry (V, I), many star clusters have been identified not only around the early-type galaxies, but also in the intra-cluster field, as far as 250 kpc from the galaxy centres. These intra-cluster globulars are predominantly blu...

4 Young Massive Star Clusters in Normal Galaxies

Young star clusters with masses similar to those of classical old globular clusters are observed not only in starbursts, mergers or otherwise disturbed galaxies, but also in normal spiral galaxies. Some young clusters with masses as high as ∼ 10 6 M ⊙ have been found in the disks of isolated spirals. Dynamical mass estimates are available for a few of these clusters and are consistent with Krou...

Are Globular Clusters the Remnant Nuclei of Progenitor Disk Galaxies?

The globular cluster system of a typical spheroidal galaxy makes up about 0.25% of the total galaxy mass (McLaughlin 1999). This is roughly the same mass fraction as contained in the nuclear star cluster (or stellar nucleus) present in most nearby low-mass galaxies. Motivated by this “coincidence”, this Letter discusses a scenario in which globular clusters of present-day galaxies are the survi...
